I wrote this in a note but will expand here: I sometimes wonder why I am here. I have no agenda besides to get my feelings out. I hope to appeal to a broader community only because in my large group of friends it doesn’t seem there are many people who are exactly relating to what I’m going through / have to say. It’s that magic when you find your “home”. That’s what I hope to find and where I am.
Hi Hanna, your instagram feed looks great - and is a good segue into where I spend time online: on instagram and LinkedIn. On LinkedIn I'm looking for interesting work-things mostly, and also intrested to see things of wider life relevance. I enjoy 'liking' what I like and find it easy to ignore the rest. On IG I love the visual inspiration, and cool ideas. I'm there more for my passions, which overlap some with work (the coaching and leadership side) but the bigger part of the circle is 'life'.
I only come to Substack to comment....I prefer reading in my email.
I think what makes me feel connected is finding content that resonates....and I do enjoy getting into conversations too,
How do I want to feel online? Inspired & connected are the two words that resonate most.
I'd love to be part of more groups, and also to host.....one day.......
Thanks for getting me thinking! And I'm off to find your IG account :-)
Thank you for sharing your experience! Maybe IG isn’t dead after all.
What you say is a good reminder but also interesting to think about: that we both feel connected when we read / consume content that resonates (I mean that’s what writing is all about) but at the same time, there’s no “real” person to person connection happening….
Ooh...you gave me another thought....I guess that is the same as reading a book...and the good thing about social media is that nowadays if we find an author we really resonate with we actually do get to connect with them a bit more via their social media...I suppose it is all comparative...now you've got me thinking about a triangle of connection from intimate to remote!
1. What are the spaces you spend time in online? How do you participate there and how do you feel in those spaces? On Instagram, I scroll. I rarely interact with anyone that I don’t also already talk to outside of social media. I feel defensive and numb. On Substack, I write and read; I also make a point of commenting to show appreciation to other writers. I feel curious and inspired. On LinkedIn, I write and I try to comment, but to be honest, I end up scrolling and feeling inadequate or numb. On Reddit, I mostly read but it feels supportive. I feel understood and seen and not alone. On Slack, I hop in inconsistently but feel like I am talking to real people. I feel heard and valued and interesting and interested and connected.
2. What makes you feel connected online? Talking to real people. Hearing from real people. Honesty and vulnerability.
3. How do you want to feel in a community online? Inspired, seen, connected, safe, brave, understood, supported, supportive.
4. If you are looking for a space what do you want to gain from a community online? Sharing experience; learning from each other; time to think and explore together; insights; slowness; togetherness; being; feeling supported; giving support.
5. How would you want to participate? Hosting get togethers, creating space; sharing my own experience; listening; on Zoom; in a WhatsApp group at a dedicated time; on a walk, listening in.
6. What would make it easy to show up and participate? A regular time on my calendar; dedicated time for it; knowing what to expect; knowing the rules and vibe of the space; knowing how I can contribute; not having to prepare; it feeling like space, not rushed; an actual conversation, not just a quick comment with one response.

So I’m on Instagram: @thruthe.looking.glass and my personal account: @hollogramm
I have also found a home in some *gasp* Facebook groups.
Facebook! I forgot about Facebook, but you’re right, there are some groups that do feel supportive and like community!
